The Premier League is a first class domestic cricket competition held in SriLanka between the various first class clubs in SriLanka.Earlier Domestic matches were limited to matches played against touring internationl teams and matches played overseas.It was in 1937 when the first Inter Club tournament known as Daily News came into being.Since then the tournament has undergone several name change.It has been known as
Daily News Trophy from 1937 to 1949
P Saravanamuthu Trophy from 1950 to 1975
Robert Senanayaka Trophy from 1976 to 1981
Lakspray Trophy from 1982 to 1990
Sara Trophy from 1991 to 1997
Premier Trophy from 1998
Currently the tournament is based on a two tier system ,both the Tiers have 10 teams each.The team placed at the top in the points table of Tier B is promoted to Tier A while the team that is placed at the bottom in Tier A is depromoted to Tier B during the next season.The Sinhalese Sports Club have been very successful having 29 titles to their name.They are the current(2007/08) winners of the Premier League.
