South Africa SuperSport Series

The SuperSport Series is a first class domestic cricket competition held in South Africa.It was introduced in the year 1989 as Currie Cup.The Cup was named after Sir Donald currie who had donated the cup.The tournament since then have undergone several name changes.
The tournament was known as
Currie Cup from 1889 to 1989 season
Castle Cup from 1990 to 1995 season
Supersport Series from the 1996 season
The tournament which began with just two teams representing the Kimberly and Transvaal provinces were latter joined by teams representing Eastern Province,Orange free State,Natal and western province.South Africa's apartheid policies affected the sport and was removed from its ICC membership for certain period unitl the policy w abolished in the country.
It was only from the 1992 season that the tournament's format was changed to 4 days earlier it was only three days.The tournament was given a new look in the 2004/05 season which had six teams representing the various provinces of South Africa.During the 2008 season Zimbabwe was invited to participate in the tournament .
