Ranji Trophy is a first class domestic cricket competition held in India every year.It was named after Ranjitsinhji Vibhajhi Jadeja,the Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanager.Known as the Black Prince of Cricketers,he had played for the English team .The Trophy was first came into being as The Cricket Championship of India in 1934 and was then started to be referred as Ranji Trophy.Mumbai have been the most successfull team in Ranji trophy ,they have had back to back wins for 15 years from 1958 /59 to 1972/73 season and have won the trophy 37 times.

Earlier the teams were divided into East ,South,west,Central and North Zones.Matches where played within the zones in the League format and the best three teams form ech zones Participate in the in the National Knock Out rounds which is then followed by the finals.This format was changed during the 2002/03 season and a two division system known as the Elite Group and Plate group were adopted.During the 2006/07 season these divisions were renamend as Super League and Plate League.

The Top two teams from these division progress to the National Knock out rounds while the finalists from the Plate group are promoted to the Super League group the next seaon.The last two teams in the Super League are relegated.Delhi won the 2007/08 season against Uttar Pradesh.
