The State Shield tournament is a limited over domestic List A cricket competition held in New Zealand every year.The first Tournament was played in the year 1971.The tournament format is Round Robin followed by the finals.Each teams have their own home grounds.Teams representing the Wellington, Canterbury, Auckland, Northern Districts and Central Districts provinces play against each other.

The top placed teams at the points table then play the finals at the home ground of the 1st placed team.The State Shield have been known by different names in the past due to the change in sponsorship.

It was known as

New Zealand Motor Corporation Knock Out from 1971/72 to 1976/1977

Gillete Cup from 1977/78 to 1978/1979

National Knock Out from 1979/1980 to 1980/1981

Shell Cup from 1981/1982 to 2000/01

State Shield from 2000/01

Otago Volts are the current champions of the State Shield.It has been a back to back victory for them, having won 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons.
