LV County Championship is a first class domestic cricket competition held in England.Even though there have been references about the Championship being held in 1825,it was only in 1864 that it was mentioned in a cricket publiction.Hence it is not clear as to when the competition came into being.

The Championship was formally organised in the year 1890.Teams representing Gloucestershire,Kent,Lancashire,Middlesex, Nottinghamshire,Surrey,Sussex and Yorkshire county of England participated in this first edition of formal championship.

These teams were latter joined by

Somerset in 1891

Derbyshire,Essex,Hampshire,Leicestershire, and Warwickshire in 1895

Worecestershire in 1899

Northamptonshire in 1905

Glamorgan in 1921

Durham in 1992

The County Championship was recognised by the MCC in the year 1895,by then the number of teams particiating increased to 14. The teams were divided into two groups of 9 teams from the 2000 season.At the end of each season ,the top 3 teams from division 2 were promoted to division 1 while the last 3 teams from division 1 were releagated.The County Championshp have had several sponsers in the past, following is the list of the sponsers
