The Irani Trophy tournament is a first class domestic cricket competition held in India every year.It was first played in the year 1959/60 and was started to celebrate the completion of 25 years by Ranji Trophy,which is a popular domestic cricket competition in India.The tournament was named after ZR Irani by the BCCI to honour his contributions to Indian cricket,he was with the BCCI from the day it was started till his death in 1970s.The tournament is contested by the Ranji Trophy Champions of the preceded year and a team representing Rest of India.The team representing Rest of India have so far been very sucessfull and are the current winners of the tournament (2008 season).They have won the tournament 20 times and have drawn the tournament once with Mumbai team.The tournament hosts a 5 day match between the two teams. The Irani Trophy Tournament marks the begining of domestic cricket season in India .
